Scholarships Based On Leaving Cert And Irish Language Ability


If you’re partial to conversing in the aul Gaelige or are expecting Leaving Cert results to make Stephen Hawking go green then keep these scholarships in mind:

Scéim Scoláireachtaí Tríú Leibhéal do Scoláirí ón nGaeltacht
Fifteen scholarships are awarded by the Department of Education and Science (DES) annually on a competitive basis to students from the Gaeltacht who have, among other things, attended an all-Irish second level school and reached a certain minimum standard in the Leaving Certificate. These scholarships are only held in respect of third level courses as approved under the Higher Education Grants Scheme. 

Scéim Scoláireachtaí Tríú Leibhéal (Trí Ghaeilge: Teoranta)
Twenty scholarships are awarded annually by the DES on a competitive basis to students who have, among other things attended an all-Irish second-level school and reached a certain minimum standard in the Leaving Certificate. These scholarships are only available to those studying a specified third level course through Irish. 

Scéim Scoláireachtaí Gaeilge Tríú Leibhéal (Neamh-Theoranta)
Fifteen scholarships are awarded by the DES annually on a competitive basis to students who have, among other things, attended an all-Irish second-level school and reached a certain minimum standard in the Leaving Certificate. These scholarships are only awarded in respect of third level courses approved under the Higher Education Grants Scheme.

Easter Week 1916 Commemoration Scholarships
Seven Easter Week 1916 Commemoration Scholarships are awarded by the DES annually to the students who obtain the highest results in particular groups of subjects in the Leaving Certificate. It is not necessary for students to apply for these scholarships. They are given in respect of third level courses as approved under the Higher Education Grants Scheme. The awards were introduced by the Department of Education in 1966 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, seven students are celebrated; one for each signature of the Proclamation. 

Donogh O’Malley School Scheme
These scholarships are awarded to top performers in the Leaving Cert who come from disadvantaged areas. There are a number of regions covered; Dublin City and County, the rest of Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. They involve an approximate annual award of €6,500 to each recipient. (This is in addition to the normal student grant and/or top-up grants support.
